Thousands of tickets issued as part of enforcement campaign

On Behalf of | Dec 15, 2016 | Truck Accidents

Every year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance mounts the Operation Safe Driver Week to help encourage safer driving practices on the roads throughout West Virginia and across the U.S. The enforcement program is designed to lower the number of injuries and fatalities that involve commercial vehicles. This involves issuing citations to both commercial and private passenger motorists.

The event ran October 16 – 22, with almost 3,000 law enforcement officials participating throughout the United States and Canada. The campaign focused on combating unsafe driving behaviors, which includes distracted driving, speeding, failure to use a seat belt, improper lane change and traveling too closely.

State and local moving violations comprised of 56.7 percent of the issues found among CMV drivers while speeding was the most common behavior of passenger-vehicle drivers at 39.4 percent. Speeding was the second most frequent offense for CMV drivers. While 2016 saw a decrease in violations for CMV drivers from the prior year, the number went up with passenger vehicle drivers.

In addition to speeding, drowsy driving and fatigue is a major concern in the trucking industry. Truck drivers spend long stretches of time on the road, and rest is needed to ensure that a driver is alert and focused while driving. If a commercial driver violates federal rules by driving longer than allowed and a truck crash occurs, they could be held liable for injuries suffered by victims. A victim may want to consult an attorney when filing a claim against a truck driver or a trucking company.
