Drunk driving crashes are preventable and claim too many lives

On Behalf of | Jul 7, 2020 | Car Accidents

Drunk driving is a serious problem in this country, so all drivers must ensure that they’re doing their part to keep the roads safe by only driving when they’re fully sober. Unfortunately, not all drivers abide by this. Instead, they choose to drive after they’ve had a few drinks or more.

An average of 29 people die daily due to drunk driving in this country. Each one of those deaths was preventable because the driver could have decided not to get behind the wheel of the vehicle and opt to use an alternative method for getting home.

There are several risks for drunk driving. Age is one of these. The vast majority of drunk driving fatalities are caused by drivers who are under 44 years old. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention breaks down those fatalities a bit more.

  • 21 to 24 years old: 26%
  • 25 to 34 years old: 27%
  • 35 to 44 years old: 22%

Another risk factor is the amount of alcohol the person had. People who have higher levels of alcohol in their system are more likely to have a fatal crash. Even when the crash doesn’t result in death, it can still cause catastrophic injuries.

If you’re the victim of a drunk driving crash, be sure that you get the medical care you need to address the injuries you have. There’s a chance that you won’t feel anything amiss right away, but it’s still a good idea to have an evaluation. If you did suffer an injury and have resulting damages, you might choose to seek compensation from the driver who struck you.
