Train derailment injures 104 people

Train accidents sometimes happen in West Virginia and around the country. One in New York demonstrates what can happen when engineers, brakemen and conductors are negligent.

In the accident, a commuter train that was carrying 430 passengers derailed at a terminal that is located in Brooklyn. The accident happened at 8:20 a.m. on Jan. 4 during rush hour. The derailment resulted in 104 people being injured with 11 requiring hospitalization. The train reportedly derailed after it hit a bumping block. Bumping blocks keep trains from going beyond the end of a section of track. Gov. Cuomo stated that the front two cars and the bumping block sustained severe damage.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s chairman stated that the train’s engineer was likely at fault for the accident. According to him, the engineer would have been responsible for stopping the train before it hit the bumping block. In another accident that happened in Hoboken, New Jersey, a woman was killed and 114 people were injured when a train crashed into a terminal that was located there.

When people are injured in a train accident that was caused by the negligence of the engineer, the railroad, the conductor or another railroad employee, the injured victims might want to consult with a personal injury to see what recourse is available. Through a civil lawsuit, an attorney may be able to hold the railroad employee and the railroad company liable to pay damages tothe client. The potential damages that may be available may include past and future medical costs, past and future lost earnings, reductions in the quality of life, disfigurement, emotional distress and other applicable amounts.
