Study shows injuries more common in small vehicle accidents

Since the last recession, the rise in the number of vehicles on West Virginia roads has climbed along with the economy. The higher number of drivers has also lead to a higher number of injury claims made to insurance carriers. Researchers have used recent data to determine which makes and models are most frequently involved in car crashes with injuries.

According to data from 2014 through 2016 model years, the conventional wisdom that smaller vehicles are more likely to lead to injury holds true. The data bears out that injury claims are more common in smaller vehicles. This is not surprising given that physics suggests a smaller vehicle is more likely to absorb damage.

Out of all vehicles, four-door micro cars have the most injury claims. These micro cars have approximately twice as many injury claims as the industry average. Minicars have only slightly better numbers, followed closely by small four-door cars and midsize sedans. The safest types of vehicles include luxury SUVs and large pickup trucks.

When it comes to specific models, sports cars are least frequently involved in injury accidents. Experts believe that the low number is due to the typically limited amount of people driving these vehicles compared to family cars. The Porsche 911 tops the list for the vehicle with the fewest injury claims. When it comes to models with the most frequent injury claims, it's no surprise that the list is full of smaller compact vehicles. At the top of the list of most dangerous vehicles is the Mitsubishi Lancer.

Injuries can happen regardless of the size of the vehicle. A driver injured in an accident caused by another person may have a claim for damages such as medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. An attorney with experience in personal injury law may be able to help a driver recover damages by filing a lawsuit and seeking recovery through the court system.
