CVSA to intensify traffic law enforcement July 14 to 20

On Behalf of | May 22, 2019 | Truck Accidents

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will be holding its annual Operation Safe Driver Week event from July 14 to 20, during which police in West Virginia and the rest of the U.S. will be ramping up the enforcement of traffic laws. Both passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle drivers can be stopped during these events and issued a warning or citation for unsafe behaviors.

To give an idea of the scope of this event, 2018’s Operation Safe Driver Week involved 51,000 law enforcement officials who stopped a total of 113,331 drivers across all of North America. Police gave out 57,405 citations and 87,907 warnings.

Aggressive, distracted, drunk and drugged driving are just a few unsafe behaviors that police will be observing the roads for. They will also stop drivers who make improper lane changes, do not wear their seatbelt, follow too closely to other vehicles and fail to obey signs that are meant to control traffic. However, the central focus will be speeding.

Speeding was a factor in 94% of traffic crashes in 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA also found that speeding was responsible for 9,717 car crash deaths in 2017: 26% of the total number that year. Over 25% of all crash deaths since 2008 are due to speeding.

When speeding or another kind of negligent driving is behind a truck crash, the victims in the passenger vehicle may want to find out if they can file a personal injury claim. That way, they might be compensated for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other economic and non-economic damages. In West Virginia, those who are less than 50% to blame may be able to recover damages. Victims may wish for a case evaluation before moving forward. If retained, the lawyer might strive to negotiate for a settlement.
