Eight most common factors in large truck accidents

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2019 | Truck Accidents

There are more than 3.5 million truckers employed in West Virginia and across the U.S., making commercial trucking one of the nation’s most common professions. This means, unfortunately, that truck accidents are also common. Below are eight of the most frequently reported causes of truck accidents.

Speeding is at the top, and it makes sense because many CMV drivers are paid by the load rather than by the hour. After that comes equipment failure. Truckers travel hundreds of miles each day, so they have a responsibility to inspect their vehicles on a regular basis. Equipment failure usually arises from the neglecting of this duty.

The third common cause is an example of equipment failure: brake malfunctions. This can lead to a runaway truck. The fourth is improperly loaded cargo as an imbalance could lead to a rollover or to jackknifing. Loose cargo could also fall out.

The next three causes are driver-related, and they are fatigue, intoxication and distraction. Fatigue is common because truckers may exceed the hours-of-service guidelines in order to meet deadlines. As for distracted driving, it’s the leading cause of fatal crashes in the U.S. Anything from using the phone to reaching for an object can be distracting. Lastly, truckers must watch out in bad weather. Trucks, especially when empty, can hydroplane on wet roads.

A truck collision can result in serious injuries for the occupants of a passenger vehicle. If the driver of the passenger vehicle is not to blame, victims may be able to file a claim against the trucking company. The claim may even involve those who loaded the cargo or who manufactured a truck part. Whatever the extent of the situation, victims may want a lawyer on their case. With legal representation, they may strive for a fair settlement out of court.
